Film fests in Aspen, Breck

The 46th Aspen Filmfest, which began Sept. 16, wraps up this weekend with films including a new take on “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” starring Diego Luna and Jennifer Lopez (Saturday, Sept. 20), as well as a free, festival-closing screening of “The Muppet Movie” (Sunday, Sept. 21) to commemorate the festival’s first year (1979). Jillith Fair

Sunday. Late singer-songwriter Jill Sobule, who hailed from Denver and found mainstream success in the 1990s with the groundbreaking single “I Kissed a Girl,” will be celebrated this weekend as part of the Neustadt JAAMM Festival (Jewish Arts, Authors, Movies and Music).

The “Jillith Fair: Loving Jill Sobule” tribute follows her May death at age 66, and includes national touring banjoist Tony Trischka and Denver legends Lannie Garrett and Mollie O’Brien & Rich Moore, who were all friends of Sobule, according to organizers, among other performers. Sunday, Sept. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elaine Wolf Theatre at the Staenberg-Loup Jewish Community Center, 350 S. Dahlia St. in Denver. Tickets are $10-$20. Opens Friday. Get a jump on fall fun this weekend with the fifth annual Magic of Jack O’Lanterns at Littleton’s Hudson Gardens & Event Center. The eye-popping display, running Friday, Sept. 19-Nov. 2, features more than 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins, expanded trails, and brand-new interactive features, organizers said.

The Enchanted Hollow Trail features a “newly redesigned glowing pathway filled with whimsical lighting, magical scenes, and never-before-seen pumpkin artistry,” along with a synchronized pumpkin light show set to music, running every 30 minutes, and a new Halloween dance party area. Add-ons include a DIY s’mores package, 3-D Jack-O’-Lantern glasses, and a Glow Pass that “lets guests become part of the show.”

Hispanic Heritage Month

Through Sept. 30. Downtown Denver’s History Colorado Center and museums across the state are celebrating September as Hispanic Heritage Month with a number of new and updated exhibits, including Dog Patch: A Pueblo Community’s Legacy, Expedition 1776, El Movimiento’s Chicano-activist history, the story-driven Zoom exhibition and “What’s Your Story,” and more.

“From early settlements in southern Colorado, to the assertions of political and social power during El Movimiento, this history is critical to understanding Colorado’s story,” organizers wrote. Some events and exhibitions will continue through October at 1200 Broadway in Denver. Tickets: Free for kids under 18, $15 for adults.
