THE TAKEAWAY

FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. – A hunting expedition gone wrong led to the rescue of a lone hunter in Georgia's wilderness, prompting first responders to launch a helicopter rescue operation.

A hunter in Fannin County, Georgia, became injured and lost while traveling along a rugged backcountry trail on Sunday morning.

It wasn't until 7 p.m., hours later, that members of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources made contact with the person, several miles off the trail and thousands of feet below the surrounding terrain in a steep ravine.

Once rescue crews found the hunter, it was determined that he was in critical condition, and it would not be possible to carry him to safety due to the extremely difficult terrain.

As a result, and because of the darkness, the U.S. Army Camp Merrill helicopter rescue team was requested to help with the extraction.
