Verizon plans and prices explained: MyPlan vs. Simplicity and which to choose

Verizon is one of the biggest wireless carriers in the US, with nationwide 5G coverage and a lineup of unlimited plans that vary by speed, hotspot data, and international access. Its myPlan system includes three main options: Unlimited Welcome, Unlimited Plus, and Unlimited Ultimate, and families can mix and match plans across different lines on the same account. On the other hand, the Verizon Simplicity plan targets single- and dual-line accounts, keeping costs low no matter how many users you add.

Thanks to its feature-packed, reliable, and widespread plans, Verizon is one of the top picks in our guide to the best unlimited data plans. Its services are relatively customizable, with add-ons that can be removed if unnecessary, a variety of offerings to choose from, and a pricing sliding scale that makes group plans more affordable per person.

Below, we'll break down Verizon's unlimited plans and prices, what you get with each tier, and which option may make the most sense depending on how you use your phone.

Verizon plans compared

All of Verizon's plans include unlimited 5G data, but the speed and performance vary by tier.

Verizon's Simplicity Plan costs a flat $45 per line per month with an Auto Pay and paper-free billing discount, or $55 without. Newcomers can also currently lock in $10 off every month when they switch from another carrier, bringing it down as low as $30 a month. It includes unlimited 5G Ultra Wideband data, 10GB of mobile hotspot data, talk, text, and data in Mexico and Canada, satellite texting, Verizon Family, and discounts on eligible connected-device plans. One important caveat: after 500GB of smartphone data in a billing cycle, speeds are reduced to 4 Mbps, while hotspot speeds fall to 1 Mbps after the included 10GB is used.

Unlimited Welcome is Verizon's most basic myPlan option, with unlimited talk, text, and smartphone data on its 5G and 4G LTE networks, plus usage in Mexico and Canada, international texting, and satellite messaging. It doesn't include premium hotspot data or full 5G Ultra Wideband access by default, though Verizon offers those features as optional add-ons. Video streams at up to 480p over standard 5G or LTE, and up to 720p over 5G Ultra Wideband on a compatible device.

Unlimited Plus adds 5G Ultra Wideband and 30GB of premium mobile hotspot data each month, along with premium video streaming and discounts on eligible watch, tablet, and other connected-device plans. After the 30GB hotspot allowance is used up, speeds drop to up to 3 Mbps on 5G Ultra Wideband or to 600 Kbps on standard 5G and 4G LTE. The plan also includes unlimited talk, text, and data usage in Mexico and Canada, international texting, and satellite messaging.

Verizon's top myPlan tier is Unlimited Ultimate with 5G Ultra Wideband, 200GB of premium mobile hotspot data, 4K video streaming on compatible devices over 5G Ultra Wideband, and international service in more than 210 countries and destinations. Travelers get 15GB of high-speed international data a month, followed by unlimited data at speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, while hotspot speeds drop to 6 Mbps after the first 200GB. The current version of the plan also includes Verizon Family Plus, Identity Secure, Global Choice, and up to 50% off two eligible watch or tablet plans.

Verizon myPlan vs. Simplicity

If you're initially confused by the difference between Verizon's myPlan and Simplicity offerings, you're not alone. I dug into the details to identify the specific features that set them apart, so you can choose the best one for you.

The biggest difference between Verizon Simplicity and Unlimited Welcome is what you get for the base price. Simplicity costs a flat $45 per line with Auto Pay, regardless of how many lines are on the account, and includes full 5G Ultra Wideband access plus 10GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data. Qualifying customers switching to Verizon can currently get Simplicity for $30 per line with an eligible discount. Everyone on the account must move to Simplicity at the same time.

Unlimited Welcome is more bare-bones, but its per-line price drops as you add people. With Auto Pay, Verizon currently charges $65 for one line, $55 per line for two lines, about $40 per line for three lines, and $30 per line for four lines. It includes unlimited talk, text, and smartphone data, including usage in Mexico and Canada, but it doesn't include high-speed hotspot data by default, and data may be temporarily slowed during congestion. Unlike Simplicity, myPlan also gives households more flexibility to mix Unlimited Welcome with higher-tier Verizon plans on different lines.

For individual customers or smaller households, Simplicity generally offers more for the money, particularly if you use your phone as a hotspot or want Verizon's faster 5G access included. Unlimited Welcome can make more sense for larger families focused on keeping the base bill low, especially once you reach three or four lines and don't need much hotspot data. It's also the more flexible choice if different family members need different levels of service.
