UPS plane crashes near Louisville airport with 3 on board

A UPS plane has crashed near the Louisville airport shortly after takeoff, according to the FAA and local police.

A UPS cargo plane has crashed near the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA said the plane crashed around 5:15 p.m. local time. Flightradar24 data shows the plane, which was headed to Honolulu, crashed a minute after takeoff.

UPS said in a statement that there were three crew members on board the jet when it crashed.

The Louisville police department said there were injuries on the ground, but it's unclear to what extent. The FAA advisory website shows the airport is closed until tomorrow morning.

The MD-11 involved, tail number N259UP, is 34-year-old tri-engine jet that was first delivered to Thai Airways in 1991 before UPS acquired it in 2006.
