Tropical Storm Cosme in the Eastern Pacific is forecast to intensify into a hurricane later Monday.
Cosme is moving toward the west-northwest near 6 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue through Monday, the NHC said. A turn toward the north with a decrease in forward speed is expected Monday night, followed by a faster north-northeastward motion from Tuesday through Wednesday.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 65 mph with higher gusts, the NHC said in its latest advisory. Rapid weakening is expected Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Cosme is located about 620 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula.
Cosme is the third named storm in the Eastern Pacific since the start of that basin's hurricane season on May 15, with Tropical Storm Alvin already forming and dissipating and Hurricane Barbara currently active and located a few hundred miles to the east of Cosme.
The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 to Nov. 30.
