Beloved ’90s Cartoon Getting the Live-Action Treatment

The long-awaited live-action adaptation of The Magic School Bus is moving forward, with Detective Pikachu director Rob Letterman officially signing on to write and direct the film. According to reports, Legendary Entertainment has acquired the project from Universal Pictures, which first began developing the movie in 2020. Actress Elizabeth Banks, 52, remains attached to star as the teacher Ms. Frizzle, a role announced when the project was first unveiled six years ago. Based on the bestselling children’s books by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, The Magic School Bus follows the adventurous Ms. Frizzle and her students as they embark on educational field trips aboard a magical yellow bus. The first book was published in 1986 and spawned a hugely successful franchise, including an animated television series that introduced generations of children to science through imaginative storytelling. Plot details for the live-action film have not yet been revealed.
