The Supreme Court ruled Friday it will uphold a law that bans TikTok if its owner, ByteDance, does not sell its U.S. assets by Sunday.
TikTok’s lawyers filed a free speech challenge that sought to block a ban on the basis of the First Amendment. The decision paves the way for the social media giant’s ban to go in effect across the U.S. on Sunday.
The decision does not seal TikTok’s fate entirely, however. Donald Trump has long said he would save the China-owned app from going offline stateside and he announced Friday he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping about TikTok by phone.
