More snow stretches as far south as North Carolina, Virginia after Winter Storm Warning issued in Mid-Atlantic

Another quick-hitting winter storm is racing over the mid-Atlantic, just a few days after places in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia saw their first snow of the season, in what has been an active start to meteorological winter across the country.

ROANOKE, Va. — Another quick-hitting winter storm raced over the mid-Atlantic, just a few days after places in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia saw their first snow of the season, in what has been an active start to meteorological winter across the country.

Snow and sleet swept across southern Virginia and West Virginia and spread over northern North Carolina, as a fast-moving storm system slid off the East Coast, taking advantage of arctic air in the region.

FIRST SNOW OF LA NIÑA WINTER BLASTS MILLIONS IN MID-ATLANTIC, UNLEASHING HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS

Sleet along the rain-snow line made for a slick Monday morning commute, particularly for drivers traveling on Interstates 26, 65, 77 and 81.

Weather-related road closures were reported around Roanoke, Vrignia during the early morning rush.

ANOTHER ROUND OF EXTREME ARCTIC AIR IS COMING

Schools were closed in parts of central Virginia as well as in Alamance County, North Carolina.

Meanwhile, snow spread across southern Virginia and parts of western and northern North Carolina.

People in Raleigh saw their snowiest December day since 2018, receiving a coating of snow on Monday, while Boone, North Carolina saw 7 inches during the span of the system.

Areas of West Virginia, such as Tornado and Shady Spring saw over 7.5 inches of snow, while Whitetop, Virginia was covered by eight inches.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Most of Virginia and northern North Carolina were under Winter Weather Advisories, with Winter Storm Warnings also issued for central and southern Virginia.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN A WINTER STORM WARNING IS ISSUED?

This latest storm bears out the long-range outlook from NOAA last month that forecast an active start to meteorological winter, due in part to the La Niña climate pattern.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, cold air will remain in place early Tuesday as the storm system pulls away from the coast, so any untreated surfaces may freeze and cause slippery road conditions.
