The soggy weekend kicked off on Saturday as warm, humid air helped fuel storms during the afternoon, producing heavy rain in a short amount of time across portions of the East Coast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, with localized flash flooding reported in some areas.

Storms continued along the I-95 corridor as the cold front continued further east on Sunday.
The storms caused isolated flash flooding in the Northeast, particularly the tri-state, including in Connecticut and New Jersey.
Moisture levels throughout the entire column of the atmosphere were well above normal for mid-September, which has made thunderstorm clusters exceptionally efficient rainmakers, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
Parts of New Jersey and Connecticut received 4 to 5 inches of rain. Individual storm cells moved slowly and repeatedly tracked over the same areas, causing issues.
Coastal areas of Connecticut saw the highest impact, as storm drains quickly overflowed and transformed roads into fast-moving rivers.
The heavy rain led to widespread road closures and numerous reports of cars submerged.
There have been nearly two dozen flood reports that expanded from northern New Jersey as far east as Rhode Island.

Some severe storms were also possible on Sunday from northern Vermont through the interior Northeast.
The main threat with any severe storm is damaging wind gusts.

The good news is that the wet weather won't last long. High pressure is expected to build into the region early this week, allowing much of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast to dry out.
