Sarah McLachlan admits she feels misunderstood after her famous ASPCA commercial. The Canadian musician confessed that the advert, overlayed with her 1997 song, “Angel,” made people believe she’s “dark and moody” in real life. “I think people have an idea of who I was,” the three-time Grammy winner said in a Thursday interview with People. “Regardless of my playful, happy nature, what was portrayed was somber album covers and dark moody music.” She added that people are often shocked at her true personality when they meet her. “[I]t surprises people when they meet me and I’m so happy and light,” she said. “They assume I’m going to be like Sylvia Plath and reading poetry and drinking wine at midnight with candles and all dark and moody.” The “Fallen” musician said all the melancholic emotions people typically associate with her, she gets “all out in [her] music.” The commercial, which debuted in early 2007, raised around $30 million in just one year for the animal rights organization, according to McLachlan. “It raised an incredible amount of money for the ASPCA,” she said. “In some ways, [it] brought me to a whole new audience.” But to this day, she still struggles to watch it. “I couldn’t watch it. It was just like, ‘Oh, God is awful,’” she said. “But it worked like a hot damn.” McLachlan has a new album, Better Broken, set to release on Sept. 19.
