BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo has announced the birth of a Chinese goral kid, marking the first time the species has been born at the zoo.

The Chinese goral was born on the stormy afternoon of July 21, without assistance from zoo staff.
"The birth of this Chinese goral is terrific news for the zoo and our animal care team," Dr. Jim Wharton, CEO of Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo, said.
Within minutes, the newborn was on its feet, closely following its mother.
Zoo officials said Chinese goral kids, like many young mountain goats and their antelope relatives, are born ready to move. Their ability to quickly stand and follow their mother is a critical survival instinct that helps protect them in the wild.

Chinese gorals are small goat-antelope species native to the steep, rocky mountains of China, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. They are known to be excellent climbers, using their powerful legs and specialized hooves to navigate rugged cliffs and steep terrain.
Due to habitat loss and hunting, the species has experienced a significant population decline.
The newborn is one of just 26 Chinese gorals living at eight Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited institutions.

"With such a small population in AZA care, every successful birth matters. We’ll have fun watching this little one grow, and we’re thrilled to share our newest arrival with visitors," Wharton said.
The birth is especially significant for the AZA's Species Survival Plan, as there were no Chinese goral births in 2025.

Zoo animal care staff are closely monitoring the new family, and officials said both the mother and her child are doing well.
