WHAT IS THE POLAR VORTEX?

For those in the Northeast and Midwest, this comes on the heels of a fast-moving winter storm this weekend, with subzero temperatures set to freeze any remaining leftover snow.

WHAT IS A WINTER STORM WARNING?

With snow on the ground and still breezy, temperatures along the Interstate 95 corridor may feel more like the teens into early morning, with wind chills in New England possibly dropping into single digits.

Meanwhile, most of the Southeastern U.S. has been under a Cold Weather Alert with temperatures in the teens, factoring in the wind chill, just a few days ahead of the start of astronomical winter on Sunday.

Cold-weather criteria in the south differs from northern states. For instance, the wind chills in the Carolinas can be as high as 5-10 degrees, but in states like Minnesota, warnings are not typically issued until the wind chill approaches -30 degrees.
