Carolinas on alert for coastal flood impacts from powerful nor'easter

The Carolinas are bracing for coastal impacts from a powerful nor'easter expected to blast the East Coast beginning Friday.

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. – The Carolinas are starting to see flooding impacts from a powerful nor'easter expected to blast the East Coast beginning Friday.

The storm has potential for several headaches, including gusty winds, heavy rain, coastal flooding and beach erosion.

Coastal Flood Advisories are in place across all of North Carolina as the nor'easter is expected to take shape on Saturday morning and impact portions of the Carolinas and the Outer Banks.

In Charleston, South Carolina, coastal flooding started on Friday, a few hours before high tide.

FOX Weather Meteorologist Bayne Froney reported from Charleston, where she had to move her vehicle to avoid a flooded parking lot.

"Charleston is used to flooding like this, they see it quite a bit," Froney said. "But not to this caliber."

The city is preparing for extensive flooding by placing barricades at its most vulnerable intersections, Charleston Chief Communications Officer Deja Knight McMillan said.

Floodwaters in Charleston had reached 5-6 inches by 10 a.m., where Froney was stationed near a marina.

Video showed some of the flooding nearby, where it was getting too deep to walk through, FOX Weather's field crew reported.

For areas in both North and South Carolina battered by recent rough surf from hurricanes Humberto and Imelda, the threat of more flooding and beach erosion presents a danger to homes already impacted by the storms.

Nine homes collapsed in just a few days along the beach in Buxton and Rodanthe, North Carolina, from late September into early October. In total, 21 homes have collapsed along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore since 2020.

Several other homes at risk of collapse sit abandoned along those beaches.

The impacts from this nor'easter will stretch from the Carolinas into New England through Tuesday.

A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk has been issued for coastal North Carolina on Saturday.
