The Food and Drug Administration has issued a Class 1 recall, the highest level of alert, for select bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. The chips were found to have contained undeclared milk, one of the FDA’s eight major food allergens that pose life-threatening risks. Last month, Frito-Lay issued a recall of a “limited number” of 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips after being alerted of the milk contamination by a customer. On December 16, 2024, the FDA published a notice on the recall and warned: “Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product.” The FDA proceeded to escalate the recall to a Class 1 on Monday, indicating that eating the chips could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.” Affected areas include retail stores and e-commerce shops in Oregon and Washington. The contaminated chips can be identified by the manufacturing code “6462307xx” or “6463307xx.” In a statement, Frito-Lay clarified that no allergic reactions have been reported thus far and that other Lay’s products are not affected.
