Vatican Warns AI Could Undermine ‘Foundations Of Society’

The Vatican released a document Tuesday calling on governments to address the risks of artificial intelligence. The document warned that the issue could significantly contribute to “political polarization and social unrest.” The resounding point of the 30-page document titled “Antiqua et Nova” was that AI can’t be trusted. Simply put, it will “gradually undermine the foundations of society.” The Vatican said it had particular concerns over AI’s ability to generate misinformation and “fake media,” using the example of deepfakes. “As deepfakes cause people to question everything and AI-generated false content erodes trust in what they see and hear, polarisation and conflict will only grow,” it said. The document, written by two Vatican departments and approved by Pope Francis, 88, maintained that AI requires “careful regulations” and expressed concerns about its unpredictable development in the coming years. According to the document, people have a moral obligation to evaluate and regulate the technology as the “shadow of evil looms here.” “AI should be used only as a tool to complement human intelligence rather than replace its richness,” the document concluded.
