Trump’s pick to lead Bureau of Land Management withdraws nomination

Kathleen Sgamma, the president of the Denver-based Western Energy Alliance, withdrew her nomination to lead the Bureau of Land Management on Thursday, congressional officials said.

Just before the confirmation hearing was about to begin Thursday morning, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management withdrew her nomination.

Kathleen Sgamma, the president of a Denver-based oil and gas trade association called the Western Energy Alliance, withdrew her nomination to lead the Bureau of Land Management, congressional officials announced Thursday.

Senator Mike Lee, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, announced Sgamma’s withdrawal during a Thursday morning hearing that would have considered her nomination, according to a news release from the Center for Western Priorities.

“Kathleen Sgamma should have been transparent with the Senate and released the list of Western Energy Alliance members,” the center’s Deputy Director Aaron Weiss said in the release. “We don’t yet know why her nomination was withdrawn. But it would be ironic, if not fitting, if secrecy and her lack of candor with the White House ultimately cost her the nomination.”
