Judge Lets Celebrity College Admissions Fraudster Get His Old Job Back

A judge has ruled that the man at the heart of the notorious ‘Varsity Blues’ scandal can return to work as long as he informs prospective clients of his criminal past. Rick Singer secured early release last summer following his Jan. 2023 conviction for masterminding a $25 million fraud scheme to help uber-wealthy parents, including Hollywood stars Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, get their kids into good universities by bribing college officials and inflating academic test results. The case captured headlines not only for the eye-watering sums involved, but also the relatively light consequences faced by participants in the scheme. Though Singer faced up to 65 years in prison, he received a sentence of just three and a half years, of which he served just 19 months, while Loughlin spent only two months behind bars, and Huffman just 11 days. Since leaving jail in Aug. 2024, Singer has apparently set up a new college consulting service, ID Future Stars, which will now have to feature a disclaimer about his history on its website, according to the recent order from a Boston federal judge.
