SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. – A heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded in California as beloved bald eagle Jackie passed away after suffering critical injuries.
On Monday evening, the nonprofit organization Friends of Big Bear Valley, which helps protect and preserve natural habitats, shared a post from The Ojai Raptor Center that announced Jackie's death.
"We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her and supported the people caring for her," Friends of Big Bear Valley said.

Jackie was given life-saving care at the Ojai Raptor Center, where she was given oxygen therapy, supportive treatment and around-the-clock monitoring within the ICU of the organization.
On July 17, officials were notified of an adult bald eagle on the ground for two days, unable to fly and that it had gotten into a fight with others.

The nonprofit believed the bird to be Jackie after not seeing her on their cameras for several days, which are free for the public to watch.
When Jackie was finally rescued, she was found to be underweight, anemic and had inflamed kidneys.
Unfortunately, Jackie was critically ill and after a long fight and extensive life-saving efforts, she passed away on Monday morning.
She leaves behind two eaglets, Sandy and Luna, who were born nearly four months ago.
