Heavy Social Media Users Warm to Ditching Democracy

Heavy internet users are less committed to the idea of democracy, a new poll has found. A Gallup and Charles F. Kettering Foundation survey published Tuesday revealed that only 57 percent of heavy social media users support democracy, compared to 72 percent of non-users. People who spend five hours or more online a day were the most opposed to elected representation, while just 62 percent of those who spend three to four hours a day were in favor. For those who scrolled for just one to two hours a day, that number jumped six points to 68 percent. Meanwhile, non-users were one point less in favor than minimal users, who were online for one hour a day or less. That group was 73 percent in favor of democracy. Among heavy social media users, however, 42 percent felt that their views were respected by other Americans, while only 31 percent of non-users felt the same way. Heavier users also felt that the average citizen had more power to influence what happens in the country.
