ATLANTA — Florida learned the hard way that it has a long way to go before competing on Georgia's level, I don't care who the Gators have beaten this season.
In other words, welcome to the rivalry, Jon Sumrall.
If you needed further evidence that Georgia remains the best team in the SEC — even after losing to Auburn — look no further than the 24-0 lead the Bulldogs carried into halftime Saturday, which ended with a 27-8 final score in a game in which Georgia had to do very little in the second half.
KIRBY SMART HAS ENTERED HIS MOST DANGEROUS ERA AFTER GEORGIA’S AGGRESSIVE WIN OVER ALABAMA
This was a Halloween Day demolition. It sent Florida fans toward the exits while their marching band took the field and provided the most entertaining part of the afternoon for those supporting the Gators.
We can throw around the word "parity" in college football until we’re blue in the face. Sometimes, though, the evidence speaks for itself.
On Saturday in Atlanta — which should essentially be dubbed "Sanford West" at this point — Georgia proved it remains the SEC’s strongest national championship contender.
As Florida fans made their way toward the exits, Georgia forced another Gators turnover in the third quarter, all but putting this away.
Did Auburn do the unthinkable a few weeks ago by awakening a monster in Athens?
Judging by what we witnessed against an overwhelmed Gators football team, it wasn’t hard to notice that Kirby Smart made sure to send a defensive message to those who were questioning whether the Dawgs had lost a step in recent weeks.
If the halftime box score wasn’t an easy enough interpretation of what was taking place inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, it clearly came when Kirby Smart continued to bring the house against a Gators offense that looked less than average.
Remember, this is the same Florida team that went into Austin a few weeks back and shocked the Texas Longhorns, sending those in burnt orange into a full-blown panic.
Then came the prognosticators who were riding a high after an upset win for Auburn between the hedges that drummed up conversations about whether this Georgia team had flaws that could come back to bite them again.
No, Gunner Stockton had a bad day and Auburn took advantage of the situation that presented itself. Across the country, we are witnessing enough hangovers in college football that would make a tourist in Las Vegas squirm.
But Georgia, well, has found a way to channel its frustration after losing to Auburn and take it out on what we thought was a pretty decent Florida football team.
This could turn out to be the Dawgs second act of the 2026 season, with a trip to Ole Miss next week that will only strengthen one of their schedules. A loss in Oxford for the Bulldogs will not hurt their chances of making the college football playoff.
In reality, Georgia could lose two more games and still have a case for a spot in the postseason.
But, judging by what we witnessed in Atlanta, there are some nervous folks awaiting Kirby Smart's arrival next week to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for a primetime showdown.
Maybe Kirby Smart should send Alex Golesh a fruit basket over the next few days for the wake-up call it received from the Tigers in Athens.
How easy was this game against the Florida defense? Gunner Stockton had only thrown for 59 yards at the 1:19 mark of the third quarter, and Georgia led 24-0.
As for the SEC, the most difficult game Georgia might actually have left on its schedule this season will be a showdown against South Carolina in Columbia on Nov. 21.
Yes, the Gamecocks are certainly playing with a much bigger chip on their shoulder after hearing the naysayers rightfully create enough noise across the country to be heard in Columbia.
And now, with games against the Rebels and Missouri over the next two weeks, the Bulldogs could clinch another spot in the college football playoff by just continuing to play with this ferocity.
I don't know if folks around the country knew what was happening in the days following Georgia's loss to Auburn.
But, I'd imagine they've gotten the picture by now.
