FDNY rescues 8 from sinking boat in New York City waters

The New York City Fire Department rescued eight passengers on Sunday after their boat began sinking in the Bronx, New York. FDNY arrived on the scene within minutes and found a partially submerged 30-foot cabin cruiser.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) rescued eight passengers on Sunday after their boat began sinking in the Bronx, New York.

According to an FDNY social media post, emergency crews responded to reports of a vessel with multiple people on board that was taking on water and sinking in Eastchester Bay.

FDNY Marine 2 and Marine 4 arrived on the scene within minutes and found a partially submerged 30-foot cabin cruiser. Several passengers were clinging to the vessel, while others were in the surrounding waters.

Emergency crews immediately began rescue operations, pulling five victims from the water. Additional crews soon arrived on the scene to assist with the rescue.

While evaluating the rescued passengers, authorities discovered that an eighth person was still missing and had last been seen clinging to a cooler that was drifting toward shore.

Marine 2 conducted a search of the area and located the victim about half a mile from the sunken boat. The passenger was struggling to stay afloat but was safely rescued from the water.

All eight victims were brought ashore and evaluated by FDNY EMS and Engine 89 for injuries and symptoms consistent with prolonged exposure to the water.

The coordinated response by Marine 2, Marine 4, and other responding units ensured that all eight people were safely rescued.
