An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder Monday in connection with a fatal Denver shooting earlier this month, police said.

Giovanni Gonzalez is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder in Denver’s Downtown Detention Center, according to jail records.

Police officials said Gonzalez is suspected in the Jan. 12 shooting death of 52-year-old Aaron Roybal, which happened around 9:11 p.m. near the intersection of South Sheridan Boulevard and West Wyoming Place.

Investigators believe a talk between Gonzalez and Roybal outside of a business in the area escalated into the shooting, police said.

Gonzalez has not yet been charged by the Denver District Attorney’s Office. He’s next scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for an advisement hearing, according to court records.
