A ground delay derailed hundreds of flights headed in and out of Denver International Airport on Tuesday amid afternoon thunderstorms.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued the weather-fueled traffic management program just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to the agency. The ground delay is expected to last through 9 p.m., FAA officials said.
As of 3:15 p.m., 323 flights at DIA had been delayed, and one was canceled, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.
Flights were being delayed by an average of 69 minutes at that time, according to the FAA. Delays were expected to increase after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Thunderstorms are possible at the Denver airport through 6 a.m. Wednesday and again after 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to hourly forecasts from the National Weather Service. The strongest chance for severe weather is from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Southwest delayed 171 flights Tuesday, followed by 88 from United and 36 from SkyWest, according to FlightAware. Ten other airlines delayed between one and six flights. The sole canceled flight was a United flight.
