Country Singer Kills Woman In Alleged Crosswalk Car Accident

Conner Smith, a 24-year-old country singer famous for his viral song “I Hate Alabama,” was behind the wheel in a crash that killed a 77-year-old pedestrian in Nashville, Tennessee, according to police. Authorities say Smith, who hails from the city, struck Dorothy Dobbins with his Chevrolet pickup truck at around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday as she was crossing the street. Dobbins later died at the hospital. “The preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian,” said a release by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, which noted that Dobbins appeared to be inside a marked crosswalk when she was hit. Smith showed no signs of impairment, and no charges have been filed “at present” as the investigation continues. An attorney for Smith confirmed his involvement the accident in a statement to People. “His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins’ family during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. “Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.” The day before the collision, Smith—a nominee for New Male Artist of the Year at the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards—performed at CMA Fest, a Nashville country music festival.
