A company associated with disgraced conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has submitted a $7 million offer for his Infowars broadcasting empire, more than twice the bid previously submitted by The Onion. The satirical website initially outbid First United American Companies, which sells supplements for Jones. However, the sale was voided by a judge—sparking the current bidding war. Jones was forced to sell off his assets after being ordered to pay a staggering $1.5 billion in damages, the result of a defamation case brought after Jones spread the conspiracy that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, which killed 20 children and six adults, was staged. The Onion‘s parent company, Global Tetrahedron, is expected to make a new counter-bid soon. The satirical site’s plan for Infowars is to turn it into a satirical version of the platform, known for spreading conspiracies and misinformation—most recently about the Los Angeles wildfires.
