Colorado Springs police shoot, kill man early Saturday

When Colorado Springs police officers approached, the man ran and reached into his waistband. One officer fired at the man and hit him.

Colorado Springs police shot and killed a man early Saturday morning while responding to disturbance calls about a man displaying a firearm around closing time for several nightclubs, according to a statement from the department.

Officers received the call just after 1:30 a.m. for a disturbance in the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue in downtown Colorado Springs. Officers monitoring downtown cameras spotted a man matching the provided description and saw that he had what appeared to be a firearm, according to police.

When the officers approached, the man ran and reached into his waistband. One officer fired at the man and hit him. Officers rendered medical aid, but the man died at the scene, according to police.

Officers later found a gun at the scene of the shooting. No other person was hurt during the incident.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the shooting. Colorado Springs police will release more information, including body camera footage, within 21 days, according to the department. The sheriff’s office is also investigating a June 23 shooting by Colorado Springs police.
