The 1999 blockbuster Blair Witch Project is creeping up on viewers for a second time. The reboot, scheduled for September 24, 2027, will “reintroduce this horror classic for a new generation,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said. The original and entirely improvised movie followed a group of three teenagers, played by Heather Donohue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard, who disappear while filming a documentary in a Maryland forest about the Blair Witch legend and ultimately leave no trace besides their lost footage. Despite an initial starting budget of only $35,000, the project, directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, grossed $250 million at the global box office and became one of the most successful indie films of all time. However, the three stars of the film fell short of their big breaks; Donohue, Williams, and Leonard never saw the profits of the film. “It became clear that, wow, we were not going to get anything,” Donahue said. “We were being cut out of something that we were intimately involved with creating.” The cult following seems to be flooding in for the second film. “If they can capture even half the creepy atmosphere of the original, horror fans are in for a treat,” one user wrote on X regarding the film’s anticipated rerun. The Daily Beast has reached out to Donohue, Williams, and Leonard for comment on whether they are being consulted for the film’s reboot.
