A Boeing 747 freighter narrowly avoided disaster after its wing struck the runway during a turbulent landing at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) in the midst of a typhoon, sending sparks flying across the tarmac. UPS Flight 5X61 was spotted trying to make two failed attempts at landing on Wednesday night as the aircraft was battered by high winds, with footage showing the jumbo jet swaying heavily as it moved in for a third descent. As the aircraft approached the runway, it was suddenly hit by a burst of wind which caused it to veer heavily to the right, causing its engine to scrape along the floor as it continued to wobble down the runway and tear off part of its cowling. No injuries were reported during the botched landing and the rest of the touchdown continued without further incident. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. It comes as Taiwan continues to grapple with Typhoon Podul, which has brought winds of up to 118mph to the southern portion of the island and led to the widespread cancellation of hundreds of flights. Eight thousand people were evacuated from the area as a precaution earlier this week, after 112 were left injured and at least one person declared missing and presumed dead.
