It's KitchenAid's most versatile stand mixer for home bakers. The Artisan Series 5-Quart model strikes a great balance of power, size, and design. Tilt-head stand mixers have a smaller base than bowl-lift stand mixers, which can often make the bowl space feel cramped. That wasn't my experience here: the Artisan's bowl felt open enough that I could scrape the sides without stopping the mixer or tilting the head back. The bowl also has a sturdy handle for easy lifting and provides plenty of room for pouring in ingredients — particularly helpful when adding more than five cups of mix-ins for compost cookies.

It's powerful enough for occasional bread baking. When kneading bagel dough, the mixer shook slightly, but it was never too noisy, or prone to walking across my counter. That said, I would not recommend making multiple back-to-back batches of stiff dough, as the Artisan's lower-powered motor could overheat with heavy, continuous use.
There are plenty of customization options. This model also offers customization, allowing you to choose from almost 50 color options, engrave your stand mixer, or switch out the standard bowl for a patterned ceramic or glass mixing bowl.
It stands the test of time. Since my initial testing, I've continued using this mixer at least once a week to make household favorites like pierogi dough, babkas, and holiday cookies. It's built for long-term, heavy use. The wide bowl is easy to remove, has a large, comfortable handle, and offers ample space for adding ingredients mid-mix. Made with the same metal parts as more expensive KitchenAid stand mixers, it has a surprisingly strong motor and a relatively roomy bowl for its size. While smaller than many of the other models, it easily handled single batches of everyday recipes like cookies, cakes, and quick breads.
I used this mixer regularly for nearly 5 years. An earlier version of the Classic Plus was my first stand mixer. I used it heavily at home until it gave out on me while kneading dough for hand-pulled noodles, a notoriously tricky dough known to tax stand mixers. This experience highlighted how most stand mixers wear over time, and why choosing a model that matches your baking habits.
Avid bakers will want something more powerful. In testing a newer version of this mixer for this guide, it handled cookies, whipped egg whites, and even bagel dough without issue. However, frequent heavy use, such as making many batches of bagel or pizza dough back-to-back, can cause the mixer to overheat or — as with my older model — gradually wear down the internal gears. Since counter space was limited, I needed a mixer light enough that I wouldn't mind hauling it out from a cabinet every time I wanted to bake. The KitchenAid Artisan Mini 3.5 Quart mixer fit the role perfectly.
It's about 25% smaller than the standard KitchenAid. Measuring just over 11 inches wide, the Mini is roughly three-quarters the size of our best overall pick. While that may not sound dramatic, the difference is noticeable in daily use: the Mini is far easier to maneuver and fits comfortably under cabinets or on a shelf. Its smaller footprint also means less to clean, and the bowl doesn't hog space in the sink or dishwasher.

I've made muffins, pasta dough, bread dough, pizza dough, cake, frosting, and countless batches of cookies in the Mini without having to adjust recipes or mixing times. Still, when I pushed it harder during testing for this guide, its limitations became more apparent. The bowl fit all the mix-ins for compost cookies, but began to overflow once the mixer was running.
It's best suited for occasional baking. Bagel dough came together successfully, but the mixer shook and "walked" during the long kneading time, enough that I felt I needed to keep an eye on it for the full 10-minutes. Wattage: The higher the wattage of the motor, the more powerful the mixer will be. Mixers with higher wattage — like the 970-watt motor on the KitchenAid Commercial Series Mixer — glide through tough doughs and don't easily overheat. If you bake at least once a week or you regularly make a lot of heavy, wet doughs like pizza or bread dough, then you'll benefit from a larger, more expensive model with a high-wattage motor built for power and durability. However, if you're the kind of person who breaks out the stand mixer once a year to make holiday cookies, you will be perfectly well off with 250 or 275-watt models, like the Artisan Mini or the Classic Plus. Lower-wattage models can also handle the occasional arduous task, like kneading bagel dough a few times a year. Be mindful that challenging kitchen tasks can be demanding on the gears of smaller machines, so give your machine time to cool down between uses if you're making stiff dough in a lower-wattage model.
Capacity: The advertised capacity of a mixer is not its actual capacity. The listed capacity is the amount the workbowl can hold when full. Not only would you have a big mess on your hands if you tried to use a mixer at full capacity, but it wouldn't operate effectively either, since the ingredients would cover the mixing attachment. Functional capacity is measured from the bottom of the bowl to the top of the mixing attachment, and is usually about 1 to 1.5 quarts less than the stated capacity. One quart is about the size of a large deli container, so if you have a recipe that regularly makes enough dough to fill four or five of those, opt for a mixer with a larger capacity of 6 or 7 quarts. It's also a good idea to buy a mixer with a larger capacity if you make a lot of bread, since the mixer needs a fair amount of clearance to knead the dough effectively.

While I drew on my own experience as a food editor who's worked in professional kitchens and used stand mixers over many years, I also put each model through the same standardized set of hands-on tests in my home kitchen. I evaluated size, power, ease of use, and real-world performance tasks like whipping, creaming, and kneading to see how they truly compare.
Size, capacity, and ease of use: I weighed and measured each stand mixer, comparing the stated bowl capacity with its functional capacity (measured from the bottom of the work bowl to the top of the mixing attachment). I also carried each mixer and noted how easy — or difficult — it was to move from cabinet to counter.
Power: I consulted KitchenAid to confirm the motor wattage for each model. Residential stand mixers typically range from 250 to 970 watts, and higher-wattage motors tend to handle heavy, wet doughs more easily.
Whipping: I whipped two egg whites to stiff peaks in each mixer, paying close attention to speed control during gradual ramp-ups. This also tested how well larger mixers performed with a very small volume of ingredients.
