Bakersfield, California bank standoff ends with hostage-taker dead after FBI-involved shooting: police

The hostage-taker is dead and the hostages are unharmed after an hours-long standoff at a bank in Bakersfield, California, according to police.

An hours-long standoff at a bank in Bakersfield, California, ended Wednesday morning with an FBI-involved shooting. 

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and all hostages were unharmed, police said.

"On Wednesday, June 3, at approximately 4:20 a.m., the hostage situation concluded following an officer-involved shooting involving Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel. Bakersfield Police Department personnel were not involved in the use of force. All hostages were located unharmed and received medical evaluation and treatment at the scene," the Bakersfield Police Department noted in an updated statement Wednesday morning.

"The suspect involved in this incident was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, and a significant law enforcement presence will remain in the area for the next several hours as investigators process the scene," the department noted.

The department instructed the public to avoid the area of Truxtun Avenue and 18th Street, and between H Street and K Street. A press briefing is planned later Wednesday.

JPMorgan Chase provided Fox News Digital with the following statement: "We are grateful to law enforcement for their swift, professional response and we're relieved that those who were being held are safe. The branch will remain closed until further notice; we are focused on supporting our employees during this difficult and stressful time, including providing access to resources and assistance."

Bakersfield police previously said Tuesday that a man had barricaded himself in a Chase Bank building with some community members.

"The Bakersfield Police Department received a call at approximately 1:00 p.m. regarding reports of a bomb threat at the Chase Bank building located at the corner of Chester Avenue and 17th Street," the police department said Tuesday.

"During the investigation, it was determined that an adult male subject had barricaded himself inside the building with several community members," the department added.

The department later announced in an X post issued just after midnight ET that it had "negotiated the release of a second hostage."

"There are currently no injuries reported," the post noted at the time.

Before police announced the end of the hostage situation, JPMorgan Chase said in a statement to Fox News Digital, "We are aware of the ongoing situation occurring at the building where our branch is located on the ground floor. The branch is currently empty, and we are working with authorities."

The FBI Sacremento said it was supporting the response to the incident.
