NEW YORK CITY – The 25th annual Tunnel to Towers 5K race defied all odds as thousands gathered and filled the streets of New York City to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11.
The event began early Sunday morning amid the first nor’easter of the fall, bringing relentless storm conditions to the Big Apple as participants and supporters endured the nasty weather.
The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Warning due to the wet weekend weather. The nor’easter brought intense wind gusts, repeated rainfall and flooding to communities and roadways in the metro area.
Participants in the Tunnel to Towers 5K pushed through severe weather to retrace Stephen Siller’s final footsteps from the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers and honor the 343 FDNY firefighters, law enforcement officers and thousands of civilians who died on Sept. 11, 2001.
FOX Weather Meteorologist Bayne Froney was on the scene amidst the heavy rain in New York City, talking to participants and former law enforcement who served the city through an undoubtedly tough time in history.
"This organization stands for first responders and military members," Former New York City Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano said. "If you’re a first responder, you give up your life, and you have young children, we’re going to pay for your mortgage."
Cassano said service members injured while serving the country will be taken care of and honored for making the ultimate sacrifice, and will never be forgotten.

Thankfully, the nasty weather conditions only fueled the perseverance of everyone attending the event.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation hosts numerous fundraisers to support veterans, first responders and their families after they have risked their lives in service to others.
